Problem that technology is supposed to solve :

African giant snails are generally slow growing and feeding strategies are sought to accelerate their development and make it more rational. Forages, agricultural by-products and other materials are often used to make feeding combinations that can accelerate snail growth. The snails' diet can be supplemented with tubers of yam bean (P. erosus var EC KEW) to optimize their zootechnical performance.

Technical characteristics of the technology :

The feed formula for better zootechnical performance is composed of 16% Talinum triangulare leaves, 16% Tridax procumbens leaves, 16% green papaya, 42% yam bean tubers and 10% kaolin powder. 
Weight gain was 13.42 ± 4.46 g and feed intake 1.07 ± 0.33 g DM/d.

Compared to the classical feeding of African giant snails, the supplementation of snails with yam bean allows to obtain a transferable size of snails in a rather short time of breeding (3 months). 

Limits of the technology :

The upstream production of yam beans is crucial for the adoption of the technology. It can be a limiting factor if this crop is not integrated into the practice of agro-pastoralists.
